Israeli troops shoot, kill Palestinian infiltrator

JERUSALEM (JTA) ? Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian man who the Israeli military said did not heed warnings as he crossed from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, the man was holding what the IDF described as a suspicious object and had been digging in the ground on the Gaza side of the border fence. He was discovered to be unarmed, according to reports.

The Palestinian man had entered Israel at a place where explosives have been placed in the past in order to attack Israeli patrols.

The IDF has launched an investigation into the incident.

Powerful leaders are speaking out for respect for gays - Stabroek ...

Dear Editor,

While I strongly believe there is evidence of more tolerance and support for gays and lesbians? than at any other time in the history of the world, there is also a growing opposition out there. More recently, Russia has openly discriminated against its gay, lesbian and transsexual population by debarring those athletes from participating ? ironic as it may be ? from the game that is supposed to unite athletes of different countries, ie, next year?s Winter Olympics.

Russia is not alone in its tirade against gays and lesbians. I do believe Russia?s case (as well as other countries with anti- gay stances) is an expression of fear of what they do not understand about homosexuality. These archaic ideas and notions propel this kind of mentality and this, in the 21st century, is nothing short of sad, disappointing, and cruel to gay people. It prompted US President Barack Obama to tell US talk show host, Jay Leno,?I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in a way that intimidates them or is harmful to them.?

Just who does Russia think it is, or any other country for that matter, to judge and impose its laws and barriers and restrictions on gay people?

They fail to realize that there is a loud outcry in the world today, especially from powerful leaders, for tolerance and respect and equal rights for lesbians and gays. Pope Francis ? the people?s pope ? spoke to reporters on his papal plane and demonstrated how he intends to set the tone of his papacy about gays.?If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?? remarked the pope.

Coming back home to Guyana: the voices for gays and lesbians are too quiet. This is because of people being frightened and scared to come out and openly talk about gay rights. The organization that is in Georgetown and which comes out whenever it feels like speaking to the issues is not doing enough.

In less than a week, two of the most powerful men in the world have both made statements that have angered many, I am sure, and have sparked numerous criticisms (silent ones) from gay and lesbian haters out there. But their statements are intended to set the tone of what is expected to be a change of attitude and way of thinking about gays and lesbians.

Speaking out for gay and lesbian rights does not make someone less of a man or woman.

Yours faithfully,
Leon Suseran

MechWarrior Online devs raise over $100,000 for cancer research

MechWarrior Online-developer Piranha Games' customized Jenner mech has raised over $100,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society, GameInformer reports.

Five-year-old Sarah Parries played MechWarrior Online extensively with her father until she recently lost her battle with cancer. In honor of her memory, Pirahna Games designed Sarah's Jenner, a unique Chassis Champion model for Sarah's favored mech type with a 10 percent experience boost.

Creative Director of Pirahna Games Bryan Ekman says the team initially thought "$10,000 would be a number we could all be proud of ... the response from the MechWarrior community and from the games industry at large has been overwhelming."

Sarah's Jenner is $10 and available for purchase until August 20. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Should college athletes get paid?

In case you have been living in a cave this week, there has been a firestorm brewing over whether college athletes should be paid or not.

It all started when ESPN?s Outside the Lines reported about an NCAA investigation of whether or not Johnny Manziel got paid by an autograph dealer to sign a few hundred items.

Both Wayne and Terry wrote about it on these pages yesterday. Now, it?s my turn.

Today?s question of the day for the Leach Report:

Jan 21, 2013; Syracuse, NY, USA; ESPN broadcaster Jay Bilas looks on prior to the game between the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Syracuse Orange at the Carrier Dome. Image Credit: Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

It?s a good question. As of right now, college athletes are not allowed to get paid until their eligibility expires due to the NCAA rule on amateurism. There has already been a massive amount of litigation relating to ?the use of the likenesses of former and current student-athletes in archival footage, as avatars (in video games), in photographs and promotions.? The class action lawsuit is against ?the NCAA, EA Sports and Collegiate Licensing Company under both antitrust and right of publicity and seeks compensation.?

Rule 2.9 of the NCAA Division 1 manual defines the Principle of Amateurism.

Student-athletes shall be amateurs in an intercollegiate sport, and their participation should be motivated primarily by education and by the physical, mental and social benefits to be derived. Student participation in intercollegiate athletics is an avocation, and student-athletes should be protected from exploitation by professional and commercial enterprises.

Article 12 further delves into amateurism. It?s very complex.

I do think that athletes should get paid but the monies should go into a trust fund that would pay out after their eligibility expires. The question I have, as I am sure others do as well, would be whether college athletes would be tempted to stay in school rather than go pro after a year?
