Gaming Roundup: Life After Halo, Bungie Embraces a New Destiny ...

Life After Halo, Bungie Embraces a New Destiny

When the Halo franchise changed developmental hands, one of the questions gamers everywhere were left with was: what would Bungie do next? Well, thanks to IGN and an ad agency document leak, now we know. Let?s talk about Destiny.

Life After Halo, Bungie Embraces a New Destiny

So what do we know so far about Destiny? According to IGN, Earth is in the throes of alien invasion, but in the middle of it all ?a?massive, mysterious alien ship [known only as The Traveler] hangs overhead like a second Moon,? serving as the planet?s protector. It is this premise that appears to be the crux of the game?the iconic image with which the game will be permanently associated, if the cover concept art is any indication. All the while, mankind?s last heroes emerge from beneath the shadow of the mothership, standing firm amongst the ruins of humanity to make their last stand against a hostile alien presence bleeding into Earth from the edges of the universe.

Little is known with respect to gameplay, but early indications are that Bungie is placing an emphasis on accessibility across multiple demographics, with a social focus. Early reports suggested the game may be an MMO, but this is still unverified?Bungie quashed those claims, dismissing them as only a joke. Of course, perhaps they?re simply playing coy. Regardless, a brand new sci-fi universe to visit, courtesy of Bungie, should be welcomed by any self-respecting gamer.?

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the first installment of the Destiny franchise will arrive in fall 2013, with subsequent major installments to follow in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Hopefully, we?ll have official news from Bungie to sink our teeth into soon.

In other gaming news this week, Hotline: Miami gets a sequel, Baldur?s Gate: Enhanced Edition launches, the CEO of the Final Fantasy franchise promises change, and Halo 4 leaks upcoming map packs. Read on!

  • IGN detailed 18 great games that you might not have played this year. This list has some names worth mentioning twice, such as Dear Esther, Hotline: Miami, Okami HD, Tokyo Jungle, and Sleeping Dogs.
  • Speaking of Hotline: Miami?a brutal little top-down indie throwback to GTA II released earlier this year?a sequel is on the way. The next game is said to feature more characters, new stories, and perhaps even a map editor.
  • Robot Chicken, meet Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale.
  • The new Max Payne 3 DLC, Painful Memories, launches on December 4, and takes gamers back to the cold, bloody New York City subway stations which made the first Max Payne?an instant classic. Fans of the original shouldn?t miss this.
  • Square Enix CEO Yoici Wada issued an apology this week for the state of Final Fantasy XIV on release,?suggesting his company should have heeded the warning of a poor beta reception, among other signs. Wada goes on to promise that development will be very different for Final Fantasy XV, or it could ?[destroy] the company?.
  • Baldur?s Gate: Enhanced Edition launched yesterday, and the first gameplay trailer launched a few days earlier. In case you missed it, we interviewed the game?s creative director, Trent Oster, last week about the return of Baldur?s Gate and the future of the franchise.
  • Confirming a rumor that has been floating about for months, Bioshock Infinite?s creative director, Ken Levine, stated earlier this week that the game will not contain any multiplayer gameplay. In our eyes, this is a positive, as the man hours that would?ve gone into creating a decent multiplayer experience can now be used to really make the singleplayer shine.
  • The Mass Effect 3 Omega DLC released this week. Check out the launch trailer below.
  • Nearly 100,000 gamers are asking Rockstar to release GTA V for the PC. Return to your roots, Rockstar. A devoted community awaits.
