Iranian President Says He's Not Scared of U.S. Bombs; He Needs to Be

COMMENTARY | It is always entertaining to read what Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has to say. In fact, it's one of the first things I do when I wake up in the morning. Today, he did not disappoint. Come to find out, the Iranian political leader isn't afraid of any of the Western threats to attack Iran -- he mocks them.

Reuters reported Ahmadinejad told Iranian media sources the country could not care less about threats to attack its nuclear research facilities. I suspect his opinion will be vastly different if Israel or the U.S. carries through on its pledge to remove any capability for Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. Political propaganda works really well, until the bombs start falling from the sky.

Ahmadinejad's latest tirade is probably just an attempt to deflect attention from his possible impeachment by the Majlis later this month. Mehrs News reported parliament members want him to explain in person why the economy has nearly collapsed since his austerity measures were enacted in November.

That's not too hard to figure out: International sanctions have destroyed the rial. The Iranian Central Bank devalued its currency by 8 percent in January to offset sliding valuations due to dramatic reductions of petro dollars, Reuters reported. That'll be just the first steps in devaluation if war strikes the region.

My favorite part of his speech was when he said the U.S. should "recognize the rights of (other) nations." I guess his demand applies to everyone except him. His call to wipe Israel from the map is hardly recognizing the rights of other countries. Ahmadinejad is, in every way, a despot that will continue to lead his country down a path of destruction.

While this Iranian president may be term-limited and effectively a lame duck after last month's parliamentary elections, there is no hope for real change until the theocracy is removed. That will take another revolution which will in all probability be a lot bloodier than the last one. Until that happens, Iran will continue to be a thorn in the world's side -- a thorn that will occasionally need to be plucked out.
