Egypt votes for 2nd day to pick Mubarak successor

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptians voted for a second day Sunday in a presidential runoff pitting Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister against a conservative Islamist, with a sense of gloom hanging over many at the polls over the choice and the prospect that the ruling military will still hold most power even after their nominal handover of authority to civilians by July 1.

In a sign of how much power they wield, the military generals were preparing to define the next president's authorities in an interim constitutional declaration that state media said could come by Monday. Under the declaration, the council of generals would be the nation's legislators and control the budget after the Islamist-dominated parliament was dissolved under a court order last week.

The generals will also likely take on the parliament's task of appointing a 100-member assembly to write the permanent constitution, giving them enormous influence over the document that will shape Egypt's future and allowing the opportunity to enshrine for themselves a political say.

As a result, for some voters even as they stood in sweltering heat at the polls, it seemed that the choice for Mubarak's successor ? between Ahmed Shafiq, a longtime friend and admirer of Mubarak, and Mohammed Morsi, the candidate of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood ? would ultimately make little difference.

"I don't trust the whole thing. I feel everything is planned in advance and what we are doing now is just part of the plan," Asmaa Fadil, a young woman who wears the Muslim veil, said at a polling station in the Cairo district of Sayeda Zeinab. She said she had lost confidence in the political process, particularly after the dissolution of parliament.

After the first day of voting ended Saturday, the Brotherhood sought to rally the public behind it, saying that a Morsi win for the presidency was now the only hope for the revolution after the military's consolidation of power.

In a statement issued late Saturday after a meeting of its top leaders, the Brotherhood denounced Thursday's court ruling dissolving parliament, saying it "amounted to a coup against the entire democratic process parliament and take us back to square one." The fundamentalist group led the now-dissolved parliament with just under half its seats.

It also criticized new powers that were given to military police and intelligence last week to arrest civilians for a host of crimes ? as minor as blocking traffic. The powers will "recreate the climate of terror and oppression and crush the people's hope for change."

Shafiq, who served as Mubarak's last prime minister, is a former air force commander and a veteran of Mubarak's governments, so he is closely tied to both the military and the old regime system. If he wins, that would likely mean a smooth relationship with the generals. His critics fear it will mean more than that ? the outright continuation of the Mubarak-style, military-backed autocracy that last year's revolt sought to uproot.

Morsi ? and the Muslim Brotherhood ? would likely have far rockier relationship with the generals and a Morsi win could bring a tussle over spheres of power. However, the Brotherhood has reached accommodations with the generals previously since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011, just as it struck deals in the past with Mubarak's regime itself.

The winner in the race will be officially announced Thursday. But the result could be known by as early as Monday morning, based on results from individual counting stations that Egyptian media and each campaign usually compile and make public.

Turnout from the two-day balloting, which ends Sunday evening, could be a significant measure. If significantly lower than the 46 percent in last month's first round of the presidential election, it would be a sign of widespread discontent with the choice and doubts over the vote's legitimacy. There were no figures yet from the current voting.

The race between Shafiq and Morsi has deeply polarized the country. Each has a core of diehard supporters. Each won about a quarter of the vote in the presidential election's first round last month in which 13 candidates were running.

But among their critics, each ? or both ? inspire a powerful enmity. The anti-Shafiq camp sees his very candidacy as an insult to the 18-day wave of unprecedented protests last year that ousted Mubarak. The anti-Morsi camp is convinced he will hand the country over to the Brotherhood to turn it into an Islamic state or that the group is just as authoritarian as Mubarak was.

"I am bitter and I am filled with regret that I have to choose between two people I hate. I have to pick a bad candidate only to avoid the worse of the two," lamented a silver-haired pensioner in Cairo's crowded Bab el-Shariyah district. He refused to give his name, fearing retribution for speaking so openly.

"Nothing is going to be resolved and Egypt will not see stability," he added.

A similarly pessimistic note was echoed by another voter, accountant Yasser Gad, 45. "The country is heading to a disaster. It will keep boiling until it explodes. No one in the country wants the former regime to rule us again."

Few voters displayed an air of celebration visible in previous post-Mubarak elections. The prevailing mood was one of deep anxiety over the future ? tinged with bitterness that their "revolution" had stalled, fears that no matter who wins, street protests will erupt again, or deep suspicion that the political system was being manipulated. Moreover, there was a sense of voting fatigue.

Egyptians have gone to the polls multiple times since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011 ? a referendum early last year, then three months of multi-round parliamentary elections that began in November, and the first round of presidential elections last month.

"It's a farce. I crossed out the names of the two candidates on my ballot paper and wrote 'the revolution continues'," said architect Ahmed Saad el-Deen, in Cairo's Sayedah Zeinab district, a middle-class area that is home to the shrine of a revered Muslim saint.

"I can't vote for the one who killed my brother or the second one who danced on his dead body," he said, alluding to Shafiq's alleged role in the killing of protesters during last year's uprising and claims by revolutionaries that Morsi's Brotherhood rode the uprising to realize its own political goals.

Polish police on high alert for hooligan violence

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:54 p.m. ET June 16, 2012

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Dozens of Polish police wearing full riot gear kept a close watch on Russian soccer fans heading to their country's European Championship game against Greece on Saturday.

Around 20,000 Russians were expected to attend the match in Warsaw, and authorities have been worried about the potential for more trouble after disturbances between Polish and Russian hooligans on Tuesday led to a few dozen injuries and more than 200 arrests.

As Saturday's game approached, thousands of Russians poured across a bridge to the National Stadium. There were no immediate reports of violence, and the atmosphere appeared to be calm and good-natured. Noisy groups of fans, some wrapped in Russian flags, chanted "We have come to win" and "Russia can only win." One Russian had a photo taken with a riot officer and shook his hand.

Russian fans also waved to Polish supporters going in the opposite direction to a fan zone in downtown Warsaw, in contrast to tensions and scattered outbreaks of violence Tuesday. Earlier Saturday, reports from border crossings said fewer Russian fans were coming than expected and that the mood was friendly.

Tuesday's fighting came as thousands of Russians marched over the bridge to the stadium for the highly charged Poland-Russia game that later ended in a 1-1 tie. It came on the Russia Day holiday and the Russians marched in a group, waving flags and nationalist symbols. The mass expression of Russian patriotism in Warsaw's capital was provocative to some Poles, who still deeply resent Moscow's imposition of communism here during the Cold War.

One of the worst cases of violence involved police firing rubber bullets and tear gas at young Polish men who attacked them with stones and bottles. Another scuffle near the stadium was apparently started by Russians.

Sales management truths and tricks (Part 1)

AUTHOR
Miklos Gasz (CBS)

There are a few tricks in sales management leadership that makes it a slightly different skill from management leadership. The main source of difference is the fact that sales people aren?t manufacturing with machines or working with computers but they get other people to do something. They have to be causative over people.

Now, sales management works only when sales managers have a good grip on sales people while sales people have a good grip on their clients. Bottom-line: Your sales management requires the best leaders you have with the best sales skills.

Why? Sales personnel will perform the best when:
- They are self determined and want to sell on their own.
- They are experts in the product or service they are selling (and that of the competitors as well).
- They are honest and driven by the true intention of helping the customer and the company.
- They are capable of becoming the opinion leader of the customer.

Thus as a sales manager one is expected to:
- Keep sales people confident and gung-ho all the time.
- Know the product or service (and that of the competitors) more than an expert and train or debug sales people in them with ease.
- Be himself honest and clean like a saint and setting the best example.
- Be capable of becoming the ?opinion leader of the opinion leaders? ? requiring the smoothest leadership skills.

How do we get sales people and managers like that? The answer is ? as usual ? that we make them. I will describe here a set of tools that proved to work very well:

SALES TRAINING

Selling and closing the sale requires skills. They can be learned and improved till perfection. But this is not the main point here. A salesman?s intention and success to sell is proportional to his self-confidence about being able to 1) get into good communication with anyone, 2) answer any possible questions, 3) handle all possible objections and situations and 4) close the sale. When he is confident he will sell. Regular sales training does teach him new tricks, new approaches but also reminds him how well he can sell. This all does add up to an ever increasing professionalism and confidence in one?s skills ? and to an ever increasing sales performance. Sales seminars once or twice a week work miracles.

I would like to remind fellow leaders that all of us have a duty of providing ongoing training or correction when we catch something non-optimum. It is especially true in sales management. A salesman?s enthusiasm can sag when he hits barriers. An antisocial customer or failures in a row can damage his confidence in his skills. A good sales manager does spot it, finds out what has happened and revives his self-confidence. It can require reviewing applicable sales materials or closing techniques, practicing with him or even referring him to an expert. Restoring the feeling of being able to 1) get into good communication with anyone, 2) answer any possible questions, 3) handle all possible objections and situations and 4) close the sale will restore good sales performance as well.

TRAINING IN THE PRODUCT

A salesman?s best weapon is that he believes in the product or service he is selling and knows it is better than that of the competitors. Just remember the MLM success of Amway or Herbalife. It requires training and regular briefing about the product, the market and the competitors. Making sure sales personnel attend briefings and updates regularly will provide the information to become an expert of the product and be able to answer any possible question of the client. Regular briefings and internal PR will keep any doubt or question mark a salesman might have about the product away.

SELLING THE BEST PRODUCT

Management has an additional duty in making sure sales people succeed: To provide the best choice on the market. It can be the best quality, the cheapest product, a unique service package, etc. The point is that the product has to have an advantage, a winning edge on the market all the time. That is the only way of having something a salesman can honestly talk about and sell. When he feels he has to lie in order to sell it will ruin his sales results. Give him something he can honestly recommend and sell.

BECOMING AN OPINION LEADER

Being an expert and having the best product on the market will turn a good salesman into an opinion leader. Let me demonstrate it through an example: I have a friend who was a salesman on the energy market for a long time. He has become a sales manager and sales trainer since. While he was still out on the field and selling for E.ON he has trained himself and kept himself up-to-date about the different tariffs on the whole market to make sure he gives accurate advice. He knew what he says is accurate and his clients discovered it as well. In a few years he has developed a good reputation and customers called him every time when the energy market changed. He knew the best tariffs and E.ON always had a segment where their prices were the best. So my friend has become an opinion leader of his clients.

People trust their opinion leaders, therefore no one sells better than an opinion leader.

Conclusion:

Sales management will have a grip on the market when sales people:
- Sell the best choice on the market (the best quality, the cheapest one, the smartest product, etc.)
- Are being trained in sales techniques regularly,
- Attend briefings and updates about the product and the market regularly.
These factors do add up to self-confident sales people and opinion leaders who will honestly recommend and sell your product.
